Wednesday Afternoon Program
September is an ideal time to visit cappadocia as already colorful scenery is enriched further by the autum colors. It should also be remembered that september is a vintage time for grape growers . Cappadocia has a long history of wine making dating back to 7000 years and microclimate created in and around Kızılırmak river has something special to offer to you.
Wine tasting is for the later part of the day. The program on wednesday, having finished the session at 13:00 and having had a quick lunch, we start hiking from Meskendir Valley(east) which is within walking distance from the hotel . This will take us to red/rose valley( south). This beautiful valley gets its name from the rose-colored rock that varies in hue and intensity depending on time of day, season and weather conditions. During the hike we will visit several cave churches, cave houses and cave tunnels. There are several routes that you can follow as marked in the map below. If you are too keen on walking you can terminate your hike at red valley east trailhead and you can be taken to Goreme Open air museum (,i.e. 6 ) by bus. If you are keen, follow the route to trailhead 3 and 4 and hike to the red valley east. You can then walk to trailend west (3) with a trail that would take you the Goreme Open air museum.

Cappadocia is well worth a visit while you are in Ankara. We have organized two tours for this; one before the symposium and the other after the symposium.
Cappadocia Tours( 2 Days)
In the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel and then we will depart on the road to Capadocia via the picturesque Salt Lake which is the second biggest lake in Turkey. Lunch will be served enroute. Upon arrival, we will directly head to the citadel of Uchisar to see the enchanting lunar landscape of the region: the “moon-like” topography of Capadocia. We will start with the natural landscape, where the wind and weather have eroded the soft volcanic rock leaving pillars, cones and “Fairy Chimneys” which are phenomenal, especially when seen for the first time. We will then visit Hunter’s Valley, which is the most beautiful panorama in the entire region. When we finish our program for the day we will return to the hotel for dinner and a rest.
After breakfast, we will depart from the Hotel to tour an underground city. Here 1400 years ago people carved underground to create huge complexes up to 50 meters deep. 30.000 people lived in the underground cities for two years to hide and protect themselves from invaders. We will then continue to the entirely unique landscape of Goreme to see rock chapels hollowed out by early Christians, and used as secret dwellings; as they were being sought first by Roman and later by Byzantine persecutors. The chapels are decorated with vivid frescoes which have withstood the corrosive effects of the time, and dating from the 6th to the 10th century. After lunch, we will also visit the pottery-making village, Avanos. In the late afternoon about 6pm we will return back to Ankara and to leave you at your hotel.
